A Practice in Listening to the Inner Voice of Love

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be a healing for your flesh
and a refreshment for your body.

—Proverbs 3:5-8

Beloved,

I have given you a sharp intellect and ability to critically think. You have done well to study, growing in knowledge and understanding. But the most valuable insight is drawn from a deeper place inside of you, where my Spirit dwells.

Pay attention to how you feel in your body. When you are relying on your own insight, you will feel a physical tightening. It will feel like a hand inside you that is clenched, trying to hold on.

When you are relying on my insight, everything inside you will soften and stay open. It will feel like a hand with its palm upturned and relaxed. This is the posture that makes you receptive to my Spirit. It allows my healing to take place, in yourself and others.

Try sitting with someone and staying open. When the hand inside you starts to clench take a breath and release control. Enjoy the sensations of my presence: the tingling or warmth, or calm reassurance. Observe what insights come to mind and gently contribute them to the conversation.

In this moment you are a healing presence, creating space for my Spirit to speak intentionally and clearly. Beloved, this is a form of prayer; this is resting in union with me.
